Intracellular actions of PCSK9

The hepatic extracellular function of PCSK9 in inhibiting the LDL receptor is now well established. With the development of novel agents that block PCSK9 synthesis upstream, investigation of intracellular actions of PCSK9 is a new focus of interest.

Dr Jan Albert Kuivenhoven (University of Groningen, University Medical Center Groningen, The Netherlands) overviews the evidence for intracellular actions of PCSK9.

PCSK9 and the beta-cell

PCSK9 is expressed in human pancreatic islets, where it down-regulates LDL receptor expression. But what are the effects of PCSK9-deficiency on glucose homeostasis and insulin secretion?

Dr Bertrand Cariou (l'Institut du Thorax Université de Nantes, France) overviews the evidence from studies to date.
